The major mechanism by which reflux occurs is due to a malfunctioning of normal control of the muscle at the lower end of the oesophagus known as the lower esophageal sphincter. This allows stomach contents to wash back into the oesophagus too frequently. Eating a “heavy” meal or lying down puts more strain on the lower oesophageal sphincter and this is why symptoms tend to be more common at these times.
